In the summer of 2018, the life of 32-year-old Damon Smith, a Black male from Saint Louis, Missouri, was abruptly and violently ended. On the evening of July 23rd, in the Gravois Park neighborhood, Smith was shot multiple times. The attack occurred in the 3700 block of Minnesota Avenue, where responding police officers found him on the ground with gunshot wounds to his head and torso.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led authorities to identify two suspects. An arrest warrant was issued for Ronnie Wright, then 26 years old, charging him with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Another man, identified as Redmond, was also implicated in the killing. Accounts of the incident suggest that a dispute escalated to deadly violence when Redmond allegedly retrieved a gun and shot Smith, who was involved in a fight. Following the shooting, both suspects reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle driven by Redmond.
A subsequent search of Redmond's residence by law enforcement uncovered two firearms that were linked to the murder. While details of Ronnie Wright's legal proceedings are not fully available, the case against Redmond moved forward. After a trial that highlighted the complexities of the criminal justice system, including conflicting testimonies, Redmond was convicted for his role in Damon Smith's death. The conviction resulted in a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole, ensuring that at least one of the individuals responsible for the fatal shooting would be held accountable for their actions.
