On the afternoon of Friday, August 20, 2021, a violent incident unfolded in the Benton Park West neighborhood of Saint Louis, Missouri. Around 4:00 p.m., local law enforcement officers were dispatched to the 2600 block of Pestalozzi Street, near the intersection with Jefferson Avenue, following reports of gunfire in the area. Upon their arrival at the scene, first responders discovered a 21-year-old male, Davion J. Birchfield, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
In the wake of the shooting, homicide detectives commenced an investigation that eventually led to the identification of a suspect. Authorities arrested Donald Vogler in connection with the death. Following his apprehension, the Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Vogler with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. The investigation revealed that Birchfield, a resident of the 3700 block of Minnesota Avenue, had been targeted in the daylight shooting that claimed his life.
