Clarence and a companion fell overboard from a skiff on the Yukon River approximately 1 mile up from Nulato. The companion floated down river and was pulled from the water unharmed. He was last seen swimming towards shore. Neither were wearing life vests. The boat was located, but despite numerous search efforts, Clarence was never found.
