On September 25, 1960, a sense of routine and anticipation likely filled the air in the small Athabascan village of Nulato, nestled on the banks of the Yukon River in Alaska. On that day, 45-year-old Claude Demoski, along with his relatives Bertha Demoski, 38, and Leo Demoski, 48, and two other community members, Harry Pitka, 39, and Emmett Nollner, set out by boat.
