In the Hyde Park neighborhood of St. Louis, a longstanding dispute came to a tragic end for 43-year-old Kori Young on September 12, 2021. Around 2 p.m. that day, outside a liquor store in the 3000 block of North Florissant Avenue, a confrontation between Young and another man escalated to fatal violence. Young was shot in the torso during the altercation and was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The man responsible for the shooting was identified as Demetrius
Branom, who was in his late 30s at the time. Police stated that he and Young had known each other for an extended period and had an ongoing conflict concerning family matters and money owed between them. The entire incident was captured by surveillance cameras, which provided crucial evidence in the investigation.
Following the shooting, Demetrius Branom was arrested and faced legal proceedings. He was initially charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. However, Branom later reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to the amended charges of one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm. As a result of the plea deal, he was sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in the death of Kori Young.
