On the evening of November 6, 2021, 51-year-old Randall Lord drove to a Sonic Drive-In located on Northeast Ralph Powell Road in Lee's Summit, Missouri, for what was intended to be a routine transaction. A resident of Kansas City and a hobbyist who legally bought and sold firearms, Lord had arranged to meet a potential buyer for a 9mm Glock pistol he had advertised online.
