The investigation into the death of 52-year-old Robert Earl Hamilton began late on the evening of August 31, 2022, in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Police were dispatched to his residence in the 1100 block of Southwest Arborfair Drive after receiving a frantic call from the victim's wife. She had returned home from work around 9:15 p.m. to find the front door locked, which she noted was unusual.
Upon entering the home, she discovered her husband lying unresponsive on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood. First responders arrived to find the wife distraught over the body, and it was quickly determined that Robert had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the back of the head.
Detectives immediately began looking into the victim's recent interactions and living situation. They learned that Robert’s adult son, Michael E. Hamilton, had moved into the home just a few weeks prior to the incident. Witnesses described the relationship between the father and son as hostile and tense, noting that the younger Hamilton struggled with mental health issues. Michael was not present at the scene when authorities arrived, but neighbors provided crucial surveillance footage that showed his pickup truck leaving the driveway earlier that evening, around 7:00 p.m. This evidence, combined with the lack of forced entry, quickly elevated Michael to the status of a person of interest.
Law enforcement utilized cell phone tracking technology to trace Michael’s movements after he fled the residence. The data indicated he had driven into Kansas before doubling back into Missouri. On September 1, the day following the murder, officers located him in Cooper County, Missouri, about 50 miles west of Columbia. During a traffic stop conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Michael was taken into custody without incident. A search of his vehicle and person revealed two firearms—a. 380 caliber handgun and a 9mm handgun—both of which appeared to have blood on them. Forensic analysis later confirmed that the 9mm handgun was the weapon used to kill Robert. Back at the Lee’s Summit residence, investigators found handwritten notes containing phrases such as 'I didn't want this' and allegations of abuse, which were collected as evidence.
The legal proceedings against the suspect moved forward in Jackson County Circuit Court. Michael, who was 23 at the time of the arrest, was initially charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Prosecutors alleged that he shot his father at close range. In May 2023, the case concluded when Michael pleaded guilty to reduced charges of voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action. A judge sentenced him to 15 years for the manslaughter charge and another 15 years for the armed criminal action charge. The court ordered these sentences to be served consecutively, resulting in a total prison term of 30 years for the killing of his father.
