In the early morning hours of July 16, 2016, the life of 20-year-old Malik Barbour was tragically cut short in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Responding to reports of a shooting in the 1500 block of SE Long Place, police discovered Barbour on the sidewalk, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The events leading up to the fatal shooting began with a verbal confrontation at a house party.
The investigation into Barbour's death quickly identified a
suspect, 20-year-old Terrell A. Ingram of Kansas City. According to witness accounts, Ingram and Barbour were engaged in an argument when Ingram, who was a passenger in a Jeep Grand Cherokee, exited the vehicle and fired up to six shots at Barbour. After a brief pause, Ingram reportedly approached Barbour and fired two additional shots before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.
Through witness testimony and surveillance footage from a convenience store that showed Ingram with the driver of the Jeep the day before the homicide, Lee's Summit detectives were able to identify Ingram as the shooter. The driver of the Jeep later confirmed that he had driven Ingram from the scene of the shooting. Police also recovered clothing that matched what the shooter was wearing on the night of the incident. Ingram was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action, with the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office requesting a bond of $250,000.
The case proceeded to trial, and on March 22, 2018, a Jackson County jury found Terrell A. Ingram guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Malik Barbour. Following the conviction, the jury recommended a life sentence for Ingram.
