In the late autumn of 1979, a young man named Martin Corbet traveled from his home in Paspebiac, Quebec, to visit his older brother in a remote part of New Brunswick. On November 15, 1979, the 17-year-old ventured into the dense woods near Bartibog Station, a heavily wooded area situated midway between Bathurst and Newcastle. He was planning on doing some hunting and was armed with a shotgun for his excursion into the wilderness. At the time he went missing, he was wearing a brown leather jacket, beige pants, a distinctive yellow, orange, and black wool toque, green rubber boots, and black leather gloves. This was the last time anyone reported seeing the young man. Concern mounted when Martin did not return from his hunting trip as expected. An extensive search was launched in the rugged terrain surrounding Bartibog Station, an area so remote that searchers had to be transported by train to begin their efforts. Tracking dogs were brought in and quickly picked up his scent, suggesting that Martin may have been moving in circles within the woods. The search teams followed footprints believed to be his along the Canadian National Railway line that ran through the area, with the tracks indicating he had walked northward for about 1.5 miles from where he initially entered the bush. Despite a systematic and thorough ground search that covered a six-square-mile area adjacent to the railway, no trace of Martin Corbet was ever found. Neither his shotgun, nor any articles of his clothing were ever recovered from the vast and unforgiving wilderness. Few details have emerged in the many years since he vanished, and his disappearance remains a painful mystery for his family and the community. The case is an overview of a teenager who went into the woods for a day of hunting and inexplicably never came out, leaving behind only a faint trail that quickly went cold and a family left to wonder what happened to him in the remote New Brunswick forest.
