In the late summer of 2021, a quiet outing for a blueberry pie marked the last known movements of 76-year-old Paul Doughty. A resident of Musquash, New Brunswick, Paul was last seen on the afternoon of August 18, 2021. Security cameras captured him at McKay's Wild Blueberries in Pennfield, a detail that would become central to the unfolding mystery of his disappearance. He was reported missing the following day when his family was unable to contact him. At the time he went missing, Paul was described as being five feet seven inches tall, weighing about 100 pounds, with short grey hair and brown eyes. Images from the blueberry stand showed he was wearing a black and white plaid button-up shirt over a black t-shirt, blue jeans, grey sneakers, and a camouflage baseball hat. His family noted he had an ostomy bag, which limited his mobility, and though he had not been diagnosed with dementia, he could experience periods of mild confusion. The search for Paul Doughty intensified, and on September 1, 2021, a significant but perplexing discovery was made. His car, a grey 2013 Buick Verano, was located deep in the woods, approximately 10 kilometers from the blueberry stand where he was last seen. The vehicle was found snagged on a stump down a series of old logging roads, a location his family felt was uncharacteristic for him to have driven to. Adding to the bewilderment, the blueberry pie he had purchased that day sat untouched in the backseat. This discovery prompted extensive searches of the surrounding area by the RCMP, search and rescue teams, and concerned volunteers. Despite these efforts, which included ground and air searches, no trace of Paul was found. His family, desperate for answers, organized their own searches to cover more ground beyond the initial police radius. As months turned into years, the investigation remained active, though without significant breakthroughs. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have stated that they do not believe foul play was involved in his disappearance, a conclusion that has been difficult for his family to accept given the strange circumstances of where his car was found. They have publicly questioned how he could have navigated the rough logging roads and then vanished without a trace. The family has continued to appeal to the public for any information, no matter how small it may seem. The case is a heart-wrenching account of a family left in limbo, holding onto hope while grappling with the unknown. The discovery of his abandoned car in such a remote location, with the pie he had just bought still inside, paints a poignant and puzzling picture of his last known hours, leaving his loved ones and community with more questions than answers.
