On January 25, 1992, four-year-old Daniel John Andersen disappeared near Finchford, Iowa, a case that has remained unsolved for decades. That day, Daniel had gone with his father, David Andersen, to a carpentry job located in the 8300 block of Newell Road. At some point, Daniel mentioned he was cold and wished to go inside. This was the last time he was reportedly seen. At the time of his disappearance, Daniel was a nursery school student at the Malcolm Price Laboratory School.
Daniel was reported missing to the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office in Waterloo, Iowa, on the day of his disappearance. He was described as a white male, standing at 3 feet tall and weighing approximately 50 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. When he was last seen, he was wearing a blue jacket and blue snow-pants.
An immediate search of the area uncovered a heartbreaking clue: small footprints in the snow. These tracks led from the house where his father was working directly to the nearby West Fork of the Cedar River and onto the ice. Despite extensive searches, no further sign of Daniel has ever been found.
Authorities have long presumed that Daniel fell through the ice and drowned in the river, though his body has never been recovered. Over 30 years later, the case officially remains open.
