Mervin Leo Walvatne, a 53-year-old man, was last in contact with his sister in Spencer, Iowa, on July 18, 1990. His sister, who also resided in Spencer, grew concerned after not hearing from him and officially reported him missing on December 16, 1990. Prior to his disappearance, she maintained regular telephone contact with Mervin, who was living in Arizona at the time.
