Mark Carl Brackebusch, a 73-year-old man with residences in both Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and Olympia, Washington, was last seen in Bonners Ferry on August 19, 2023. His disappearance was marked by unusual circumstances at his home, where he left without closing the windows or garage, and the doors were unlocked. It was not until August 31, twelve days after he was last seen, that Brackebusch was officially reported as a missing person.
Following the report of his disappearance, authorities located Brackebusch's vehicle at the Shorty Peak trailhead on U.S. Forest Service Road 2251. This discovery prompted an extensive search of the surrounding area in an effort to find him. Despite the thorough search, no signs of Brackebusch's whereabouts were found.
Authorities believe that Brackebusch may have become lost while hiking and subsequently succumbed to the elements. Although his remains have never been located, it is believed that he died from exposure in the Shorty Peak area.
