On November 14, 2016, 66-year-old Stuart Edward Savanuck went missing after renting a boat in Jensen Beach, Florida. He departed at 10:00 a.m. from Jensen Beach Boat Rentals, located in the 9800 block of south Ocean Drive, aboard a beige 2007 23-foot Parker center-console boat. Savanuck, described as an experienced boater who had previously owned multiple boats, planned a day of fishing with the intention of heading south. He was scheduled to return the rental boat by 5:00 p.m. that evening.
When Savanuck failed to come back as expected, the owner of the boat rental company alerted the authorities. His rented vehicle was discovered left behind at the marina. This initiated an extensive search and rescue operation for the missing boater and the vessel.
The search for Stuart Savanuck and the rented boat was widespread, covering a vast area of the Atlantic Ocean. Rescue crews from the Coast Guard scoured more than 30,000 square miles of water, extending from the coast of Florida to the Bahamas. Despite the comprehensive nature of the search, no trace of Savanuck or the boat was ever found. As a result of the unsuccessful search, Savanuck is presumed to have drowned at sea.
