Lenton “Ty” Ward, an 18-year-old senior at Vero Beach High School, went missing on May 13, 2020, while swimming off the coast of Jensen Beach, Florida. He was last seen around 4:30 p.m. near Dollman Beachside Access, about 150 yards offshore, when he suddenly vanished in the choppy waters. Ward, who was an accomplished athlete, played both football and lacrosse for his high school, wearing number 45 on both teams.
His disappearance prompted an extensive search effort involving multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, local sheriff's offices, and Florida Fish and Wildlife. Despite 24 searches over 58 hours, covering more than 900 miles, authorities were unable to locate him, and the Coast Guard suspended the search pending new information.
Ward was remembered as a well-loved student with a passion for sports and academics, maintaining a high GPA while taking dual-enrollment classes. His disappearance left his community heartbroken, and many memorialized him in vigils and moments of silence. School officials, friends, and family described him as a joyful and inspiring young man who had a bright future ahead.
