On February 28, 1985, 24-year-old Billie Jean Hall departed from her home in Jessup, Maryland, embarking on a trip to a biker convention in Daytona Beach, Florida. She was traveling in her camper, described by some as a Nissan or Datsun model and by others as a 1984 Marago, with a friend. Hall, who had suffered brain damage from a previous car accident, planned to visit friends in Orlando before attending the annual "Bike Week" in Daytona Beach and was expected to return to Maryland
within two weeks.
During their journey south on Interstate 95, Hall and her friend picked up a hitchhiker named "Aubrey" near Richmond, Virginia. The trio continued to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where an argument reportedly occurred between Hall's friend and Aubrey, possibly concerning alleged drug use by Hall and Aubrey. This disagreement led to Hall's friend leaving the group and returning to Maryland on March 3. Hall continued the trip with Aubrey, traveling to at least Brunswick, Georgia.
Hall never made it back to Maryland as planned and was reported missing after her family hadn't heard from her for four weeks. In the weeks following her disappearance, her father began receiving credit card statements for purchases made in Daytona Beach, including restaurant meals, merchandise, and a pair of men's size 9 shoes, suggesting someone else was using her card.
In August 1985, Hall's camper was located in Cameron, Oklahoma, in the possession of the man identified as Aubrey. He claimed that he and Hall had arrived in Daytona Beach together, but she left with another person and never returned, so he took the camper. Aubrey was subsequently charged with theft of the vehicle.
