On May 25, 2003, 19-month-old Acacia Patience Bishop was abducted from her great-grandparents' home in Salt Lake City, Utah, by her mentally ill grandmother, Kelley Jean Lodmell. This incident occurred during a supervised visit, but when Acacia’s great-grandmother left the room, Lodmell fled with the child. They were later spotted near the Snake River in Idaho Falls on May 26.
Lodmell, soaking wet, claimed that Acacia had drowned in the river after she dropped her while they were dangling their feet over the water. Despite extensive searches, including shutting down a nearby hydroelectric plant, Acacia's body was never recovered, although some of her belongings were found on the riverbank.
Lodmell, diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, admitted to trying to commit a murder-suicide. However, Acacia's family remains convinced that she is still alive, suspecting that Lodmell may have given the child to someone before being taken into custody. Lodmell was charged with kidnapping and murder, but was acquitted by reason of insanity in 2005. Despite the family's belief that Acacia could still be alive, the authorities have classified the case as a homicide due to the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
