In the late spring or summer of 1997, a six-year-old boy named Peter J. Kema Jr., affectionately known as 'Peter Boy,' vanished from the island of Hawai'i. For months, his absence went unreported to authorities. When questioned, his parents, Peter Kema Sr. and Jaylin Kema, told a convoluted story about taking their son to O'ahu and giving him to a woman named 'Auntie Rose Makuakane' in an informal adoption.
