In the early hours of a summer morning in Fort Smith, Arkansas, sixty-nine-year-old Gerald Leroy Bingham was seen by his neighbors for what would be the last time. It was 2:00 a.m. on June 8, 2000, when he departed from his home, telling his neighbors he was making a short trip to Talihina, Oklahoma.
