Darren Christopher Smith, a 39-year-old experienced sailor from San Diego, California, went missing on January 20, 2003. On the day of his disappearance, Smith had sailed his 20-foot sloop from De Anza Cove. Later that day, his boat was found adrift off the coast of La Jolla, still fully rigged for sailing but with no sign of Smith onboard.
