Darren Christopher Smith, a 39-year-old experienced sailor from San Diego, California, went missing on January 20, 2003. On the day of his disappearance, Smith had sailed his 20-foot sloop from De Anza Cove. Later that day, his boat was found adrift off the coast of La Jolla, still fully rigged for sailing but with no sign of Smith onboard.
Smith, who had a scar on his chin and was known by the nickname "Dog," was a seasoned sailor who typically stayed close to shore.
Despite extensive searches by the Coast Guard and other authorities, he was never found, and it is feared he may have drowned. However, no remains or further evidence have been recovered, leaving the case unresolved.
Smith's boat, though accounted for, provided little in the way of clues as to what might have happened during the sail.
