In the spring of 2003, 35-year-old Michael A. Sheppard vanished from Perkins Township, Ohio, leaving behind a family searching for answers. The last time his mother saw him was in late April of that year. He had arrived at her home in Milan, Ohio, behind the wheel of a red Ford pickup truck he said he had just purchased. He mentioned he was on his way to get license plates for the vehicle and promised to return in a couple of days. Michael never came back, and that brief visit marked the last time his family would hear from him. Prior to his disappearance, Michael had been staying with his mother and stepfather, but they had recently asked him to leave after discovering his involvement in selling drugs. Months after Michael was last seen, the situation took a more ominous turn when his mother began receiving threatening phone calls. The calls came from two brothers in Las Vegas, a place Michael had previously lived. They claimed he had stolen thousands of dollars from a drug dealer and demanded to know his whereabouts, issuing threats against his life. It was after these disturbing calls that Michael's mother officially reported him as a missing person. According to his family, Michael had struggled with drug use since high school and had become involved in selling them in his twenties. Despite his struggles with addiction, he had always maintained contact with his family, making his sudden silence all the more alarming. For years, the case grew cold, filled with unsubstantiated rumors about what might have happened to Michael. Authorities came to believe he was likely murdered by drug associates, and that his remains might be located somewhere in Huron County. A significant break in the case finally came in May 2017, when three men—Joshua W. Stamm, Adam White, and Scott Hall—were indicted for their roles in Michael's presumed death. Stamm eventually cooperated with prosecutors, pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in October 2018. He admitted that Michael was shot multiple times during a drug deal that had gone wrong and stated that his body was buried in the Fox Lane area, located between Norwalk and Milan. Following this information, law enforcement conducted searches in that area but were unable to locate Michael's remains. In March 2019, the case against the other two men concluded when Adam White and Scott Hall pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of obstructing official business; in exchange, the more serious charges of murder and robbery were dismissed. Although the legal proceedings brought some measure of resolution, the overarching question in Michael Sheppard's case remains unanswered, as his body has never been found, leaving his family without the closure of bringing him home.
