Shortly after this initial interaction, as Marcell and his friends moved to another corner, the same man reappeared, this time in a different vehicle, a gray and black Jeep Cherokee or Ford Bronco with Florida license plates. The situation escalated rapidly as the driver and a passenger, described as a blond man in his mid-twenties, exited the vehicle and violently accosted Marcell. He was pistol-whipped, sprayed with Mace, and then forced into the back of their vehicle, which sped away. Marcell Byers has not been seen or heard from since that day.
The investigation into Marcell's sudden and violent disappearance quickly led authorities to a father and son duo, Gerald Zuppo Sr. and Gerald 'Jerry' Zuppo Jr. It is believed that the motive for the abduction was retaliation, as Marcell had allegedly robbed Jerry and stolen a gold chain from him. A few days after Marcell was taken, both Zuppos were arrested and charged with kidnapping. In a turn of events, just as their trials were about to begin with jury selection underway, both men pleaded no contest to the kidnapping charges.
