On what seemed to be an ordinary Monday, December 27, 2010, 42-year-old David M. Mekvold went to his job at Standard Insurance in Portland, Oregon. He worked through at least part of the day, and his wife reported having a normal conversation with him on the phone at 1:30 p.m. After that phone call, David was never seen or heard from again. Later, a coworker at Standard Insurance made a few unsettling observations. David's personal belongings had been removed from his cubicle, and his uneaten lunch was discovered in a nearby garbage can. When he failed to return home from work that evening, his wife promptly reported him missing to the Gresham Police Department.

The day after his disappearance, David's gray 1998 Mazda pickup truck was found abandoned. The vehicle was located in a secluded, wooded area on a gravel road in Skamania County, Washington, approximately 40 miles east of Portland near Beacon Rock. The discovery of his truck prompted an extensive search of the surrounding area, which included about 20 searchers and several search dogs. Search and rescue teams scoured the challenging terrain, which included the area across nearby railroad tracks down to the Columbia River.
