Vladimir Horak, a 63-year-old tourist from the Czech Republic, went missing on April 28, 2011, while swimming in the Hanakapiai area off Kauai's north shore. He was visiting Hawaii with a tour group and had gone hiking to Hanakapiai Beach. While swimming in the ocean, Horak encountered difficulties in the water. His friend, who was swimming with him, attempted to pull him to shore but was unsuccessful. The friend swam back to shore alone and, upon looking back, could no longer see Horak.
