Matthew Bergman, a 21-year-old Navy sailor, was last seen on July 26, 2011, while serving aboard the USS *Boxer*, an amphibious assault ship stationed out of San Diego, California. Bergman, who held the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class, was reported missing after he failed to show up for his scheduled watch while the ship was in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Oman.
Despite an extensive search involving multiple ships and aircraft, the Navy was unable to locate Bergman, and the search was officially called off after several days.
Originally from Franklin, Tennessee, Bergman had enlisted in the Navy in 2008 and was temporarily stationed aboard the *Boxer* at the time of his disappearance. His case was investigated by both the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and the commander of Amphibious Squadron 1. While the exact circumstances of his disappearance remain unclear, it is believed that Bergman may have gone overboard during the ship's deployment in 5th Fleet waters.
