Curtis Austin Holmen, a 31-year-old teacher from Missoula, Montana, was last seen on July 22, 1984. That evening, he left his home to change the battery in his truck. Before leaving, Curtis called his girlfriend, confirming plans to meet her at a movie theater the next day. However, he never showed up, and this was the last confirmed contact anyone had with him.
Twelve days later, his 1976 Toyota pickup was discovered abandoned on a remote logging road near Placid Lake.
Inside the truck, authorities found his wallet, eyeglasses, and a forest map, but the keys were missing, and there were no signs of a struggle. Curtis had been planning a future hiking trip, and his tracks were found overlaid with grizzly bear prints in the rugged terrain near where the truck was located. A man resembling Curtis was also reportedly seen at a Girl Scout camp around 20 miles from the location, but this sighting remains unconfirmed.
Despite an extensive search of the area, including reports of a female grizzly in the vicinity, neither Curtis nor any further clues regarding his fate were uncovered. While authorities speculate he may have died from an animal attack or suffered a mishap in the wilderness, his brother has suggested there may be a connection between Curtis’s disappearance and the case of a local priest who vanished around the same time.
