In the late spring of 2014, a young man named Jonathan Wayne Edmond Jr. vanished from Columbia, South Carolina. At 27 years old, Jonathan was last seen by his mother on May 15, 2014, when he left a residence on Eerie Street. Another account places his last known location in the vicinity of Two Notch Road and School House Road sometime in early June of that year. He had recently moved in with a female friend near Farrow Road and Marshall Street.
At the time of his disappearance, he was described as being 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing around 120 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He was believed to be wearing a t-shirt and blue jeans and carrying a black and white bookbag.
Jonathan's disappearance was not immediately reported to the authorities. His family noted that he would sometimes move around and drop out of sight for periods. His mother explained that at his age, she initially assumed he was taking care of himself and had simply neglected to get in touch. However, concern began to grow when weeks turned into a month with no word from him. The alarm was heightened when Jonathan's girlfriend contacted his mother, also looking for him. His usually active Facebook account fell silent, and calls to his cell phone went straight to voicemail. He was officially reported missing on June 15, 2014, a month after his mother last saw him. Compounding the worry for his safety was the fact that Jonathan suffered from diabetes, which required medication. He also had hip dysplasia and had undergone partial finger and toe amputations due to his diabetes.
The Columbia Police Department's Special Victims Unit was assigned to investigate Jonathan's case. Investigators checked local hospitals and jails in their search, but these efforts yielded no leads. Although early in the investigation police stated there was no element of foul play, that assessment later changed. As the search continued without any sign of Jonathan, authorities began to suspect that he had been a victim of foul play and may have been murdered. His family's concern grew, as it was uncharacteristic for him to be out of contact for such an extended period.
