In the early autumn of 1997, a trip to celebrate a joyous occasion took a tragic and mysterious turn for Male Antoine Jones. He and his brother had traveled from their home in Greensboro, North Carolina, to Richland County, South Carolina, to attend the baptism of a friend's child. They checked into the Quality Inn on Horseshoe Drive on September 19, 1997, but shortly after, the 29-year-old Jones vanished.
His brother, unable to find him in their hotel room the next day, reported him missing on September 20, 1997. Jones, described as a Black male with black hair, brown eyes, and a scar on his left forearm, has not been seen or heard from since that day.
The initial investigation into Jones's disappearance yielded a grim discovery. Three days after he was last seen, his 1994 Lexus was found wrecked on Christian Street in West Columbia, South Carolina. The driver had fled the scene of the accident. When authorities examined the vehicle, they found a substantial amount of blood inside, leading them to believe that Jones had met with a fatal injury. Despite this evidence suggesting foul play, the case grew cold over the years, leaving his family with no answers about what happened to him.
Years later, a renewed effort brought significant developments in the case. In 2009, investigators reopened the investigation into Jones's disappearance. A crucial step was taking a DNA sample from Jones's son to compare against the blood found in the abandoned Lexus years earlier. This new look at the evidence, combined with new tips, led to a breakthrough. In February 2010, authorities arrested Bryen Brice and charged him with the murder of Antoine Jones. Brice ultimately pleaded guilty to the charge. Investigators believe Jones, who had a troubled past and involvement in drugs, was killed during a drug deal that went wrong. Another man, Errol West, is also wanted in connection with the case but remains a fugitive.
