At 3:20 p.m., a state trooper encountered him on Interstate 65 near Franklin, Indiana, where his motorcycle had broken down. Kallenberger assured the trooper that help was on the way, having already contacted his sister to arrange for a friend to assist him.
Later that day, authorities found Kallenberger's motorcycle still at the scene, but there was no sign of him. A voicemail he left for his sister during this time raised concern, as he mentioned being set up, hinted at having a gun (though he likely only had a BB gun), and described a truck backing up near him before abruptly ending the message with, "Oh my God. I'll call you back."
