John Alden Malloch, a 47-year-old man from Waterville, Maine, went missing on the evening of September 26, 1965. Legally blind due to injuries sustained during World War II, Malloch was staying with an acquaintance in Waterville when he left the residence for fresh air and never returned. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a shirt, trousers, and bedroom slippers, and was known to wear thick eyeglasses due to his impaired vision.
