Robert D. Smith, a 70-year-old man from Caribou, Maine, went missing on November 18, 1997, while hunting near Garfield Plantation. Smith had been hunting with his wife, who last saw him crossing a township line blaze around 2 p.m. that afternoon, appearing to follow a deer. A single gunshot was heard by family members shortly afterward, but Smith never returned, and a subsequent search by family and wardens failed to locate him.
