Celeste Hensley, a 20-year-old woman, disappeared on August 10, 1976, while hiking in the Cloud Peak Wilderness in the Bighorn Mountains near Kaycee, Wyoming. She had been hiking with two female friends when they decided to climb Cloud Peak without her. Hensley, feeling tired, chose to stay near the trailhead. When her friends returned around 5:00 p.m., she was gone. At the time of her disappearance, she was not carrying any supplies, only a candy bar.
The following day, a group of hikers reportedly saw a woman matching Hensley's description walking toward a nearby lake, but they were too far away to verify her identity or call out to her. Extensive search efforts, involving bloodhounds, helicopters, and volunteers on horseback, covered about 80 square miles of the rugged wilderness but found no trace of Hensley. Despite early speculation that marital issues might have caused her to leave voluntarily, her family refuted these claims, stating she was excited about the trip.
