On April 5, 2023, a 72-year-old Black male named John Baptist Taylor was discovered deceased in his San Diego apartment. The leasing manager of the building had called the San Diego Police Department to conduct a welfare check after having concerns about Taylor's wellbeing. Upon arrival, the police officers found Taylor unresponsive and promptly confirmed his death at the scene.
