Warren Luther Alexander
Overview
Warren Luther Alexander (born January 12, 1951) is an American suspected serial killer and former long-haul truck driver who has been charged with multiple murders spanning several decades. Investigators believe he targeted vulnerable women, many of whom were engaged in sex work. His alleged crimes remained unsolved for decades until advances in forensic DNA testing and investigative genetic genealogy helped identify him as a suspect. Authorities have stated that the investigation remains active and that additional victims may exist in other states because of Alexander's extensive cross-country trucking career.
The 1977 Ventura County Murders
In 1977, three women were murdered in Ventura County, California. Each victim died from strangulation, and investigators quickly recognized similarities between the cases. However, despite collecting forensic evidence, investigators were unable to identify a suspect for more than four decades. In 2023, the Ventura County Sheriff's Cold Case Unit reexamined the evidence using modern DNA technology. The investigation ultimately linked Warren Luther Alexander to the crimes, and he was extradited to California in August 2024 to face three counts of first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty, and the criminal proceedings remain ongoing.
North Carolina Murder Case
Before being charged in California, Alexander had already been arrested in North Carolina in connection with the 1992 killing of Nona Stamey Cobb. Investigators allege that Cobb was strangled and her body was left near Interstate 77 in Surry County. DNA evidence developed through investigative genetic genealogy identified Alexander as the suspect decades after the crime. That prosecution remains separate from the California murder cases.
Known and Alleged Victims
- Kimberly Carol Fritz (18) — Died May 29, 1977. Found dead inside a motel room in Port Hueneme, California. The cause of death was determined to be strangulation. She is one of the three women whose murders led to Alexander's California murder charges.
- Velvet Ann Sanchez (31) — Died September 8, 1977. Found dead in Oxnard, California. Authorities determined she had been strangled. Investigators believe her killing followed the same pattern as the other Ventura County murders.
- Lorraine Ann Rodriguez (21) — Died December 27, 1977. Found deceased in an unincorporated area of Ventura County near the Laguna Road Bridge. Her autopsy concluded that she died from strangulation.
- Nona Stamey Cobb (29) — Died in July 1992. Her body was discovered near Interstate 77 in Surry County, North Carolina. Investigators allege she was strangled before her body was abandoned. Alexander was arrested in 2022 and charged with her murder.
Investigation and DNA Evidence
The breakthrough in the decades-old investigations came through advances in forensic DNA analysis and investigative genetic genealogy. Biological evidence preserved from the 1977 crime scenes was compared with modern DNA databases after Alexander became a suspect during the North Carolina investigation. Authorities concluded that the forensic evidence connected him to all three California homicides. Detectives have stated that preserving evidence over many years was critical to solving the cold cases.
Continuing Investigation
Because Alexander spent many years working as a long-haul truck driver throughout the United States, investigators have publicly stated that they are examining whether he may be connected to additional unsolved homicides. Law enforcement agencies continue reviewing cold cases involving similar methods of killing, particularly strangulation, and are encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward. As of now, no additional murder charges beyond the California and North Carolina cases have been announced.
