On Sunday, June 5, 2022, a violent sequence of events unfolding in southeast Missouri led to the untimely death of 18-year-old Zionta LaShawn Haynes. Known affectionately as 'Zay' or 'Drakko' to those close to him, the young male resident of Charleston, Missouri, was discovered by authorities in the neighboring town of Sikeston. Police were initially called to the scene of a vehicle crash, where they found Haynes inside the car suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
He had been a passenger in the vehicle, which had fled the scene of a shooting incident that occurred earlier that day. Despite the discovery, Haynes had already succumbed to his injuries, marking a tragic end for the teenager who had been a former football player at Charleston High School.
The investigation launched by the Charleston Department of Public Safety quickly determined that the fatal violence had originated in Charleston rather than at the crash site. Law enforcement officials pieced together that the vehicle Haynes was traveling in had been targeted by gunfire before speeding away toward Sikeston, where the driver eventually lost control. The driver of the vehicle, whose identity was not immediately released, also sustained gunshot wounds during the attack but survived and was subsequently transported to a hospital in St. Louis for urgent medical treatment. By the following day, authorities announced a significant breakthrough in the case. On Monday, June 6, 2022, police arrested 21-year-old Tyrese Tate of Cape Girardeau in connection with the murder. Tate was taken into custody and held at the Mississippi County Jail without bond. Prosecutors levied a litany of serious allegations against him, including charges of first-degree murder, first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and the unlawful use of a weapon. The swift arrest provided the initial steps toward legal accountability for the shooting that claimed Haynes' life and injured the surviving driver.
