On August 13, 2022, fifty-nine-year-old Elizabeth Engman Gill was fatally shot inside her home in Kirkwood, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. Friends and family remembered the victim as a kind woman with a 'heart of gold' who was a beloved mother, sister, and aunt. The tragedy unfolded on a Saturday evening when her ex-boyfriend and business partner, fifty-four-year-old Todd M.
Wilbert, allegedly began contacting her repeatedly to demand money.
According to investigators, Wilbert arrived at Gill's residence on the 1100 block of Ascot Lane around 7:30 p.m. that evening. He reportedly let himself onto the property and spent time drinking wine on her back patio before entering the house without her permission. As the situation escalated, Gill called 911 to report that a man was inside her home pointing a gun at her. During the emergency call, dispatchers could hear a male voice in the background, which authorities later identified as Wilbert's, followed by the sound of a gunshot.
Police officers rushed to the scene after receiving the 911 call and reports from neighbors who heard multiple gunshots. Upon entering the residence, they discovered Gill deceased from gunshot wounds. Wilbert was found nearby on the property, reportedly lying on a concrete pad next door. He was taken into custody, and prosecutors subsequently charged him with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, first-degree burglary, and unlawful use of a weapon while intoxicated.
