On a late summer evening, the vibrant area near the Gateway Arch in St. Louis was shattered by violence that claimed the life of Nicholas Taylor, a 30-year-old man from Ferguson. The shooting occurred around 11:50 p.m. on September 5, 2022, on North Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard. When police responded to the call, they found Taylor on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals, a 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, were also shot and taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition.
The investigation revealed that Taylor and an acquaintance, George D. Gholston, had arrived at the riverfront together. An argument erupted between the two men, and as Taylor walked away, Gholston fatally shot him in the back of the neck. An eyewitness identified Gholston, who was also known by the street name 'Terminator,' and surveillance footage captured his vehicle leaving the scene immediately after the shooting. Phone records also placed Gholston at the location of the murder.
George D. Gholston, who was 33 at the time of the sentencing, was later apprehended. Due to a prior robbery conviction in 2010, he was prohibited from possessing a firearm. Just as his case was set to go to trial, Gholston reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. In court, Nicholas Taylor's mother gave a moving impact statement, sharing that the loss of her son compelled her to leave her job as a teacher 'for fear of the anger inside me,' and that the tragic event left her two-and-a-half-year-old grandson without a father. Gholston was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder with a concurrent seven-year sentence for the firearm charge.
