On the evening of January 29, 2018, violence erupted in the parking lot of the Oak Park Apartments in St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of a young man. Montez Hoskin Jr., a 23-year-old male, was at the complex located in the 11000 block of Estrada Drive in the Spanish Lake area of North St. Louis County when gunfire rang out shortly after 6:00 p.m.
The sudden shooting left Hoskin critically wounded in the apartment's parking area, prompting a desperate response from those around him.
Rather than waiting for emergency services to arrive at the scene, friends of the victim made a frantic decision to transport him themselves. They drove him to the nearby Woodson Terrace Police Station in hopes of securing immediate assistance. Officers at the station coordinated with medical personnel, and Hoskin was subsequently rushed to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, turning the investigation into a homicide case.
Detectives from the St. Louis County Police Department launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter. Through their investigation, they identified a suspect, Tyree Valdez, who was believed to be connected to the shooting. Authorities located and arrested Valdez on February 5, 2018, a week after the incident occurred. The investigation suggested that the violence may have stemmed from a transaction gone wrong, as indicated by the subsequent criminal charges filed against the suspect.
Prosecutors charged Tyree Valdez with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Hoskin’s death. Additionally, Valdez faced a felony charge of attempted delivery of a controlled substance, shedding light on the possible motive behind the deadly meeting in the apartment complex parking lot. Following his arrest, Valdez was held in custody as the legal process began, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for May of that year to address the serious accusations levied against him.
