On the evening of Saturday, October 15, 2022, 15-year-old Wyatt Dean Conroy, a white male student at Blue Springs High School, was fatally shot in the parking lot of The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Blue Springs, Missouri. Authorities responded to the scene at 601 N.E. Jefferson Street around 6:30 p.m., where they found the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the location.
The incident occurred in a public area that was later used by community members for a vigil to mourn the loss of the young student, who was known for his involvement in wrestling, choir, and the Boy Scouts.
The investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from a transaction arranged over social media that went awry. Court documents indicate that Conroy and another student had gone to the church parking lot with the intention of purchasing marijuana. Surveillance footage captured a white Pontiac Grand Prix arriving at the scene with five occupants inside. During the encounter, Conroy allegedly produced a firearm he had brought with him and offered to sell it to the individuals in the vehicle for $400. Reports state that after he handed the weapon to a passenger in the backseat, the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee. Conroy reportedly grabbed onto the moving car and was dragged a short distance before a single shot was fired from within the vehicle, striking him in the head.
Following the shooting, the white Pontiac fled the scene and was later discovered abandoned and burned in a Kansas City alleyway, complicating the collection of forensic evidence. Witness descriptions provided to police identified the front-seat passenger as a Black male between the ages of 20 and 30, who was seen with a handgun in his lap prior to the shooting. In the days immediately following the homicide, detectives executed search warrants on digital devices, including laptops issued by the school district, to trace the Snapchat accounts used to set up the meeting. As of late October 2022, law enforcement had not announced any arrests or filed formal charges against specific suspects, and the case remained an active investigation with police urging the public to provide tips.
