On the morning of October 24, 2022, a tragedy unfolded at the Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in St. Louis, Missouri, where students and staff were settling into their daily routines. Jean Kirk Kuczka, a 61-year-old female health and physical education teacher who had dedicated decades to her profession, was teaching a class on the third floor.
Known for her passion for education and her love for her students, she was nearing retirement but remained a steadfast protector of the children in her care. The school day was violently interrupted when a former student arrived at the campus in a blue sedan, armed with an AR-15-style rifle and over 600 rounds of ammunition.
The gunman, identified as 19-year-old Black male Orlando Harris, entered the building by shooting out the glass of a locked door. As the sound of gunfire echoed through the hallways, the school went into lockdown, with students and teachers barricading themselves in classrooms. Harris moved through the school, terrorizing the community he had once been a part of. When he reached Kuczka’s classroom, he forced his way inside. In a final act of bravery, the longtime educator placed herself between the intruder and her students, shielding them from harm. She was shot and killed, sacrificing her life to save others. A 15-year-old student, Alexzandria Bell, was also fatally shot during the rampage.
Officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department arrived on the scene within minutes of the first 911 calls. They entered the building and immediately began tracking the sound of gunfire, moving toward the third floor where the shooter was located. Police encountered Harris and engaged him in a gun battle. During the exchange, the suspect was struck by police fire and sustained fatal injuries. He was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Because the sole suspect died as a result of the confrontation with law enforcement, there were no arrests made in connection with the shooting. Investigators later discovered a note in the gunman’s car in which he expressed feelings of isolation and resentment. Authorities also revealed that Harris had previously attempted to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer but was blocked by a background check, eventually acquiring the weapon used in the attack through a private sale. The investigation concluded with the determination that the shooter acted alone, leaving the community to mourn the loss of a devoted teacher and a young student.
