In the winter of 1972, a quiet home in Gary, Indiana, became the scene of a brutal crime that would echo through the decades. On December 23rd, 69-year-old Leonard Frank Wick was killed inside his residence during a home burglary. The tranquility of the holiday season was shattered by this act of violence, leaving a lasting scar on the community.
The man responsible for the death of Leonard Wick was identified as Rufus Averhart.
Averhart and an accomplice broke into Wick's home, and during a struggle, Averhart shot and killed the elderly man. Following an investigation, Averhart was apprehended, tried, and ultimately pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection with Wick's death. He was sentenced to prison for this crime.
After serving a portion of his sentence for the killing of Leonard Wick, Rufus Averhart, who later changed his name to Zolo Azania, was released from prison on July 8, 1980. His freedom, however, was short-lived and marked by further violence. In 1981, Azania was involved in a bank robbery in Gary during which he murdered police officer George Yaros. This subsequent crime led to a series of high-profile trials and legal battles that would span decades, with Azania being twice sentenced to death for the officer's murder, only to have both sentences overturned.
