Eryk Todd Heck, a 27-year-old police officer from Allen County, Indiana, tragically lost his life on August 15, 1997. Officer Heck was responding to a burglary in progress when he encountered a suspect in a remote area near the crime scene. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 1:30 am, on an abandoned railroad right-of-way off Till Road, approximately one mile from the home where the burglary was reported.
