On the evening of September 17, 2001, Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Matthew Baker, a 24-year-old male, was on duty in Indianapolis when he attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle, occupied by four individuals, fled, initiating a high-speed pursuit. During the chase, an occupant of the fleeing car opened fire on Deputy Baker's patrol vehicle with an AK-47 assault rifle, causing significant damage to his car.
