Jose Melendez, a 52-year-old Hispanic man, was a respected figure in his East Chicago, Indiana community. A retiree from Local #17 Heat and Frost Insulators of Chicago, he was an active member of the Harbor Lighthouse Church and a former East Chicago Little League coach. His life was tragically cut short on July 14, 2010, during what was described as a senseless act of violence. On that day, Melendez was killed during a carjacking incident.
