In a tragic turn of events on February 20, 2014, 47-year-old Walter Burnell was killed in his Indianapolis home on South Parker Avenue. This was not a solitary act of violence, as three other individuals lost their lives alongside him: Jacob Rodemich, 43, Kristy Mae Sanchez, 22, and Hayley Navarra, 21. The incident, which was determined not to be a random act, stemmed from a robbery conspiracy that spiraled into a quadruple homicide.
The plan, orchestrated by four individuals, was to rob
Burnell. The suspects were later identified as Kenneth 'Cody' Rackemann, Anthony LaRussa, Valencia Williams, and Samantha Bradley. Investigators pieced together that LaRussa had masterminded the robbery, even providing an alibi for Rackemann. On the day of the murders, Rackemann entered Burnell's residence with the intent to rob him of money from a safe.
The situation inside the house quickly escalated. When Rackemann demanded money, a confrontation ensued, leading to him fatally shooting Burnell. He then proceeded to shoot and kill Rodemich and Sanchez. After running out of ammunition while attempting to shoot Navarra, Rackemann called for Williams, who was waiting in a car outside. Williams then came into the house and shot Navarra twice, ending her life.
In the aftermath, all four suspects were apprehended. Kenneth Rackemann, the primary shooter, eventually pleaded guilty to the four murders and a robbery charge. He received four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, in addition to 20 years for the robbery. Samantha Bradley pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery. The cases against Anthony LaRussa and Valencia Williams were also processed through the legal system, with LaRussa pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery and receiving a 44-year sentence.
