In the early morning hours of July 23, 2014, a chance encounter in the small town of Bicknell, Indiana, ended in a violent altercation that left two men dead in what police have described as a murder-suicide. The victim was identified as 33-year-old Paul Ryan Russell, a male resident of Bicknell. The incident unfolded around 2:00 a.m. when Russell encountered 48-year-old Todd Godare.
According to Indiana State Police, an argument erupted between the two men.
The verbal dispute quickly escalated, and at one point, Russell reportedly armed himself with a bat. In response, Godare produced a. 22 caliber revolver and shot Russell, killing him at the scene. Following the shooting, Godare fled the area in his pickup truck, sparking a search by local law enforcement.
Approximately two hours later, a Vincennes city police officer spotted Godare's vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Godare did not comply, leading to a low-speed pursuit. The chase concluded with Godare taking his own life with the same firearm used to kill Russell.
Investigators at the time suggested that a possible motive for the deadly confrontation may have been a domestic issue involving a person known to both men, though this was not officially confirmed. Both Paul Ryan Russell and Todd Godare were reported to have had previous criminal records. Autopsies were scheduled to be performed on both men to confirm the causes of death. As Godare, the sole suspect, died by suicide, no arrests were made in connection with Russell's death.
