In September 2017, a gathering to honor a man who had been killed weeks earlier turned into the scene of another tragedy in Indianapolis. Kirk J. Shurill, a male, was driving his car in a parking lot in the 1800 block of East 23rd Street where a large crowd had assembled. It was here that his life was cut short in a fatal encounter.
According to witnesses at the scene, Jeffery Buckley approached Shurill's vehicle, leading to a dispute.
The argument escalated, culminating in Buckley pulling out a gun and shooting Shurill multiple times. The gunshots caused Shurill's car to crash. The motive for the dispute and subsequent shooting was not immediately clear, but the event sent shockwaves through the community that had gathered to mourn a previous loss.
The investigation into Shurill's death led to the arrest of Jeffery Buckley. He was charged with the murder and eventually stood trial in 2019, where he was convicted and sentenced for the crime. However, the legal battle was far from over. In August 2020, the Indiana Court of Appeals reversed the trial court's decision and remanded the case. This led to a new three-day jury trial in March 2022. Once again, Jeffery Buckley was found guilty of the murder of Kirk Shurill. Following this second conviction, Buckley was sentenced to 60 years in prison for his role in the 2017 shooting.
