In the early morning hours of October 5, 2014, what should have been a joyous celebration of a new marriage turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy in Terre Haute, Indiana. Kelly Ann Arney Samson, a 50-year-old female registered nurse, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds in her home, just hours after her wedding. The idyllic start to her new life was shattered in a violent act that ended not only her life but also that of her new husband.
The evening had begun with a wedding
reception at a local banquet center where Kelly married Dr. George Scott Samson, a 54-year-old anesthesiologist she worked with at Union Hospital. However, witnesses later recounted a palpable tension between the newlyweds. This unease reportedly carried over to an after-party at the couple's home. Guests observed that the couple was not speaking to each other, and George was seen leaving the reception early, visibly irritated. Some sources indicated the argument may have been about a prenuptial agreement, with one witness claiming to have heard George tell Kelly she would 'never get her hands on his money.'
As the after-party wound down and the last guests departed around 1:17 a.m., the situation escalated dramatically. Shortly after, Kelly made a series of desperate 911 calls, the first of which came in around 1:20 a.m. In these brief and frantic calls, she pleaded for help, stating that her husband was assaulting her, had threatened to kill her, and had access to guns in the house. Tragically, in her panic, Kelly provided an incorrect address to the dispatcher, slightly transposing the numbers of her street address, which delayed the police response. During the final 911 call, the dispatcher heard screams followed by what sounded like multiple gunshots.
When Vigo County Sheriff's deputies finally arrived at the correct address, they made a horrifying discovery. Kelly Samson was found deceased in a bedroom, having sustained gunshot wounds to her head, chest, and neck. Her 10-year-old son from a previous relationship was found unharmed in the same room. The perpetrator, her husband George Samson, had barricaded himself in the basement. A SWAT team was called to the scene, and using a remote-controlled camera, they found George Samson dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The case was ruled a murder-suicide, with George Samson as the sole suspect. Consequently, no arrests were made, and the investigation was closed. A search of the home revealed a large cache of approximately 90 to 100 firearms, including rifles, handguns, and fully automatic weapons, for which George Samson was a registered dealer.
