On the evening of Saturday, March 14, 2015, violence erupted in the 1800 block of East 20th Court in Gary, Indiana, claiming the life of a local resident. Tiffani Murphy, a 38-year-old Black female who lived on the same block where the incident occurred, was the primary victim of the gunfire that broke out around 6:00 p.m. The chaotic scene drew the attention of neighbors and witnesses, some of whom acted quickly to transport her to the hospital rather than waiting for emergency services to
arrive.
Murphy was rushed to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus, where medical personnel fought to save her life throughout the night. Despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries the following morning and was pronounced dead at 6:20 a.m. on Sunday, March 15. The Lake County Coroner’s office later ruled her death a homicide, marking a tragic end for the Gary woman within her own neighborhood.
The shooting also resulted in critical injuries to a 51-year-old man who was present at the scene. He was transported to the same hospital, where he remained in critical condition in the immediate aftermath of the attack. Gary police investigators, including the Violent Crime Unit, processed the scene and launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the double shooting. In the days following the violence, reports surfaced indicating that a Gary man had been charged with murder in connection with Murphy's death, though specific details regarding his identity and the legal outcome of those charges were not widely publicized in available records.
