In the autumn of 2022, a grim discovery was made inside an abandoned residence on Jackson Street in Gary, Indiana. On the afternoon of Sunday, October 2, 2022, police responded to a call regarding a man bleeding from a gunshot wound to his head on the front porch of the house. While attending to the male victim, officers were alerted to the possibility of a second person inside the vacant building.
Upon entering, they found 50-year-old April King unresponsive in a back room.
Medical personnel from the Gary Fire Department were summoned, but it was too late; she was pronounced lifeless at the scene. The Lake County Coroner's Office later officially identified the victim as April King of Cedar Lake and ruled her death a homicide.
The initial investigation, led by the Lake County Metro Homicide unit, suggested the incident was an isolated one, pointing toward a murder-suicide attempt. While the male on the porch was treated for his injuries, the full story of the events that transpired within the walls of the desolate house remained under investigation.
